Acoustic Guitar Chords! This is where the music starts!

Acoustic guitar chords are the backbone for acoustic guitar music.

Knowing and understanding chords are crucial concepts in any kind of music.

Open guitar chords are the first thing that any guitar player should learn.

Open position chords are mostly played in the first three positions or frets of the guitar by pressing down certain strings to shorten the length of the string, changing the pitch of that certain string.

Most chords are made up of at least 3 notes or a triad. When combined and strummed together these 3 notes comprise the chord.

The chord is made by stacking 3rds on each other.

Take C Major for instance, The notes are C, E and G. These notes are the 1,3, and 5 notes of the C Scale.

Or perhaps a F Chord.

Or a G Chord

Once these 3 simple chords are mastered, many songs can be played with them.

The majority of country and folk songs along with rock, blues, rockabilly and gospel revolve around three chord progressions.

A progression simply means changing chords in a specific order and timing.

Using the C, F, and G is called a I, IV, V progression or you could use a I,V IV progression.

Regardless of what progression you use, remember that the string has to make solid contact with the fret to shorten or lengthen the string for a pitch change.

So plant your fingertips firmly on the fingerboard and practice until you get the correct sound out of your efforts.

There are all types of chords.

There are major chords, minor chords, major and minor 7th chords, fifth chords, sixth chords, ninth chords, suspended chords and diminished chords.

Music theory is behind each group of chords and the following pages will give you basic knowlege of that theory.

Which came first the music or the theory? The music of course!
